The map above shows the coastal route from Aire River West campground to Castle Cove and then finishing at Johanna Beach. This 14km section is one of the absolute best of the whole trail.
The trail from Aire River slowly ascends up to the cliff edge which opens up incredible coastal views and then the trails descends down to the waters edge which means you have these incredibly large cliffs to your right hand side before slowly making your way up to the Castle Cove lookout where the trail meets the Great Ocean Road for the first and only time.
Google Earth image shows the terrain from Castle Cove to Johanna Beach. Note that whilst the track is not shown, the trail joins the beach just to the right of centre on the above image. This means hikers have a solid 1km long walk along soft sand to finish at Johanna Beach.
